Our approach to payment fees
mycause has never added a surcharge to donations or payments, and that won't change.
What's changing in Australia?
The Reserve Bank of Australia (RBA) has been reviewing how card payment costs and surcharges work across the country. From October 2026, new rules will apply to Visa, Mastercard, and eftpos transactions — banning surcharges on these card types entirely. The goal is straightforward: no more surprise fees at checkout, and a clearer, simpler experience for everyone.
This doesn't affect mycause. We've never surcharged donors, and we never will.
How donation fees work
When you donate $100, the full value of your donation goes to the cause.
There is a 'donor pay' tick box for donors to cover platform fees. This charge is the mycause platform fee and does not cover bank credit card fees. Platform fees are charged by mycause for running and supporting the fundraising platform. Many charities and campaigns pay 0% platform fee.
Payment processing fees are paid by the beneficiary and include the payment fee charged by networks (Visa, Mastercard, Amex, or PayPal*) to process your transaction. This is a cost mycause incurs and passes on.
*Visa/Mastercard are network rails, Amex is a closed-loop network + issuer, and PayPal is a digital wallet / payment service provider that can sit on top of those rails or route around them entirely
