Our approach to payment fees
mycause has never added a surcharge to donations or payments, and that won't change.
What's changing in Australia?
The Reserve Bank of Australia (RBA) has been reviewing how card payment costs and surcharges work across the country. From October 2026, new rules will apply to Visa, Mastercard, and eftpos transactions — banning surcharges on these card types entirely. The goal is straightforward: no more surprise fees at checkout, and a clearer, simpler experience for everyone.
This doesn't affect mycause. We've never surcharged donors, and we never will.
How donation fees work
When you donate $100, the full value of your donation goes to the cause — but a small amount is deducted in fees before it reaches the beneficiary. Here's what those fees cover:
- Platform fee — charged by mycause for running and supporting the fundraising platform. Many charities and campaigns pay 0% platform fee.
- Payment processing fee — a fee charged by mycause that includes the payment fee charged by networks (Visa, Mastercard, Amex, or PayPal*) to process your transaction. This is a cost mycause incurs and passes on.
*Visa/Mastercard are network rails, Amex is a closed-loop network + issuer, and PayPal is a digital wallet / payment service provider that can sit on top of those rails or route around them entirely
